Principal’s Welcome

Welcome to Meán Scoil Mhuire’s school website. Our website has been designed to welcome and assist new and prospective parents and students to develop an understanding of the wealth of tradition and success that makes Meán Scoil Mhuire a unique educational destination in Longford.

Our school is Longford’s only all-girls’ secondary school, based in the centre of Longford town, close to the train and bus stations. The school has a population in excess of 550 students and 40 staff. We are a Mercy School, proudly educating the young ladies of Longford in the Mercy tradition, echoing the founding intentions of the Mercy Order which arrived in Longford in 1861, maintaining high standards and achieving excellence in education. Our school is guided by CEIST, our trustee body, which provides us with a set of core values which support and nourish the lives of the members of the school community. These values are:

  • Promoting spiritual and human development
  • Achieving quality in teaching and learning
  • Showing respect for every person
  • Being just and responsible.

Although the school ethos is Catholic, we welcome students of all religions. We are proud of our Catholic ethos, and all events in the school are celebrated in the spirit of the school ethos. Masses at the start of the school year, during the liturgical year, and to celebrate the graduation of our senior students are significant events in the school calendar.

The academic success of our past pupils is very evident throughout the many universities in Ireland. In fact, the majority of our students proceed to university after their Leaving Certificate. Annually, our Leaving Certificate students are invited to celebrate their academic success at the entrance scholarship awards. In 2016 alone, our students were recognised in the University of Limerick, Maynooth University, DCU, UCD and Trinity College Dublin. In addition, our Junior Certificate students are regularly acknowledged for their achievement of national top grades in many subjects.

Aside from our academic success, Meán Scoil Mhuire has a longstanding tradition of sporting excellence. Our basketball teams have been All-Ireland Champions, many of our current students are underage football champions, and we have a very strong camogie school team.

Other extra-curricular activities are just as valued as sports in the school. From our website, you may catch a glimpse of the wonderful sense of music and drama that prevails in the school. In addition, students are involved in many debating teams in both Irish and English, alongside civic projects such as Green Schools.

Our students learn how to become active members of the wider community through their journey in Meán Scoil Mhuire. We foster an atmosphere of respect for the dignity of each individual, with her unique background, tradition and beliefs. We provide a disciplined atmosphere in which the pupils can grow and mature. Pupils are exposed to a rich cultural heritage, and acquire knowledge and skills which enable them to understand and respect themselves, others and the environment in which they live.

Choosing the right school for your daughter is one of the most important decisions that you will ever make for your child. In an atmosphere of mutual understanding and respect, your daughter will be challenged by an exciting academic curriculum allied to a wealth of sporting and cultural activities. At the core of our excellent school is an excellent teaching staff, who have embraced new curriculum developments and technological advances in education and strive to deliver new and innovative practices in education to provide the best educational experience for your daughter.

Partnership in Education is valued in our school. We have a very active student council and value the contribution of the Parents Association to the development of our school community. Communication with parents is vital for us and assists us in building an environment of trust between home and school. In addition, this fosters full transparency relating to expectations for all our students. This allows the development of a safe and secure learning atmosphere for all our students.

Please continue on your journey through our website, where you will develop a sense of our school community. Our academic programmes are described in detail and our extensive extra-curricular activities are listed. You will also get a sense of the excellent pastoral care system which is paramount to our girls’ experience in Meán Scoil Mhuire. If you have any further questions, please contact the school to make an appointment to discuss your daughter’s educational journey with us.
